Is Copywriting a Dying Trade?

As a person interested in a copywriting career, I’ve been asking myself this question. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming more prominent and advanced than ever before. But will AI take over the copywriting world?

Copywriting is versatile. Every business needs well-written copy.

You can write copy for a myriad of purposes. Some examples include:

  • Email marketing
  • Social media advertising, posts, and descriptions
  • Blogging
  • Telling customers exactly what they’re considering and why to buy it
  • Magazines and newspapers

And so much more!

The need for a human to write copy seems like it’s dwindling with the evolution of AI. If a robot can do it faster and for a fraction of the price, will the need for copywriters disappear?

It could happen, but it will not eliminate humans immediately.

There are a lot of copywriting AI services out there, such as:

This is not a comprehensive list, but you get the idea.

Humans VS Robots

While there are many AI services out there, there’s an argument to be made that AI can’t do everything a human can do. At least not yet.

For instance, AI effectiveness is based on how it is trained and used. Without that training, AI isn’t going to be useful. While current AI may lack perfect training to perform its job duties, who’s to say that won’t change in the future?

As it stands right now, AI can be trained to write similarly to a particular author or text. However, it still can’t interpret meaning or context like a human can. Because of the way AI is trained, it also can’t produce original content comparable to that of a human.

Finally, for AI to be effective, it will need to be trained in all of the languages of its users.

That’s quite the feat.

This is because AI is not capable of understanding the nuances of language. Therefore, it may not produce engaging or persuasive text in every language.

So what does this mean right now?

AI has a long way to go. While it can be used to increase productivity, a human touch is still required.

In fact, I used AI to aid in writing this blog post! I put in a prompt and the AI-generated a paragraph of decent content. From there, I modified it to fit my needs.

Here’s the prompt I used and the answer ChatGPT provided:

As you read in Humans VS Robots, I took what AI created and made it my own. I added more explanation and changed the formatting. I still wrote the copy, but AI made it easier and more efficient.

For the time being, copywriting is still something that humans have a hand in. It’s changing but it’s not dead yet. Short of every company training their own AI for their specific needs, copywriting will continue to be primarily performed by humans.

AI is a helpful tool, but not the end-all-be-all solution.
